It’s the middle of fall and you’ve already carved pumpkins, conquered corn mazes, and gone on a hayride or two. What’s next? Visiting Jim Thorpe, of course!

The town is nationally recognized as one of the most beautiful and adventurous places to visit in Pennsylvania. It’s located in the Lehigh Gorge and within driving distance of Philadelphia, New York City, and Baltimore. The town’s shops, restaurants, and live entertainment make it an ideal destination for a weekend getaway.

Here are just a few great places to visit on your next visit:

The Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway offers classic coaches powered by diesel engines. The ride brings passengers along Lehigh River bridges, through Glen Onoko, and into the Lehigh Gorge State Park. Views of cliffs and forests are plentiful and you’ll enjoy beautiful fall foliage views this time of year.

There are also Santa Claus specials and Easter specials scheduled each year. Visitors can also participate in Bike Trains where tickets should be purchased in advance!

The Asa Packer Mansion

The Asa Packer Mansion was established in honor of the founder of Lehigh University. Philadelphia architect Samuel Sloan built the home, which stands at 11,000 square feet, in 1861. Packer’s daughter, Mary Packer Cummings, donated the home and its contents to the Borough of Mauch Chunk. In 1956, the home became open to the national public and is recognized by the National Park Service.

Guided tours are available to visitors and can last up to one hour. Be sure to make a reservation if you plan to visit with a group of 15 people or more!

Stone Row Pub & Eatery is a quaint, cozy spot to enjoy a great meal. The restaurant is housed in a building from the 1880s and offers seasonal dishes and specialty drinks. Owner Margaret White prepares each menu with an awareness of food allergies to ensure everyone can find an entree to enjoy.

Almost all meals are made from scratch and ingredients are locally sourced when possible. If you have a food allergy that’s not already catered to on the menu, just call ahead and Stone Row will accommodate your needs!

T. S. Encore

T.S. Encore (or Tony Stella’s Encore) in what once was General Charles Albright’s mansion build in 1860. Guests such as President Cleveland and President Grant were once welcomed in the building, and its original doors are still in place.

The restaurant features select seafood and steak dishes, all paired with live piano entertainment. Patrons can enjoy a meal in the main dining area or on the patio. The Absinthe Bar is also available for a seasonal signature cocktail or a glass of select wines.


Stonekeep Meadery

Stonekeep Meadery is Pennsylvania’s first dedicated meadery and helped pave the way for other dedicated meaderies. Their mead, or honey wine, is made from in-state fresh fruit and raw honey. In 2013, Stonekeep introduced grape wines to their line and expanded the business into a wine cellar as well. Options range from dry to sweet and an assortment of unique flavors are available. Jim Thorpe visitors can enjoy the mead in Stonekeep’s full-time tasting room!
