Sugarloaf is a township located in Luzerne Country in the region that is known as the Conyngham Valley. Initially, present-day Sugarloaf Township was a part of Newport Township, which was one of the original Connecticut townships in Northeastern Pennsylvania. Nescopeck Creek powered the first sawmill in 1810 and was later the home to gristmills and a steam mill, as well.
This area has a rich history and maintains its natural beauty. Conyngham Valley is formed by Nescopeck Mountain in the north and Buck and Butler Mountains in the South. Much of the township is composed of farmland.
